ABOUT KARAVAN

Feel the excitement of a traveller, coming from treasured territory and arriving in a new spot. Curious about the connections to make, on so many levels. A veritable feast for the senses!

We believe that intuition and open-mindedness are central to music-making. We create performances that challenge us, searching for influences from places and people to fuel our fantasy. We call it Karavan.

We present a fresh, musical narrative, weaving together timeless masterpieces with our own creations. It’s great fun, but this group of musicians takes the process very seriously, using workshop dynamics to find the right form for our ideas. There is play, movement, and experiment, and nothing is ever set in stone.

Along the way, we are fortunate to encounter guest musicians such as Kaito Winse, Ambi Subramaniam, Simon Leleux, Karim Baggili, Tristan Driessens, and Julien Brocal.

Join us as we pitch our tents. Share in our joy and energy when we present the latest entry in our logbook.

Karavan. Groove on the move

MEET KARAVAN

Lorenzo Gatto

Born to a Venetian father and a Belgian mother, Lorenzo took up the violin not out of burning passion, but because ‘it’s good for a child’s development’. What he really wanted was to fly planes. Sadly, the aviation industry takes a dim view of underaged pilots, so the violin had to do.
By seven, he was charming wedding guests (‘I’ve married half of Belgium’); by thirteen, he was a professional musician – just in time to fund his pilot's license at sixteen.
Now an award-winning violinist known for his pure tone and sensitive virtuosity, Lorenzo founded Karavan to blend artistic depth with his craving for freedom and exploration. Offstage, he’s usually outdoors chasing altitude; sailing, hiking, or paragliding down a mountain, hoping he’s still within GPS range.

JULIA KOTARBA

Music found Julia on long singing walks with her grandpa, who once told her and her twin sister, ‘Girls! You actually have a good ear’. At age seven, she became a cellist the moment she heard The Swan. As a twin, she’s never known life without a built-in musical partner – or a second opinion. A dreamer by nature and a Cracow native by birth, she now lives in Brussels, but swears her heart beats faster in New York City.
Julia brings a mix of raw fire and warm expression to the Karski Quartet, which she co-founded. She was awarded for her exploration of classical music and crossing genre lines. Off stage, she can be found treasure-hunting at flea markets, naming her plants (Antonio, Lucius Henry…), or getting blissfully lost in unfamiliar cities – with an appropriate film soundtrack on her headphones.

NATALIA KOTARBA

Born five minutes before her twin, Natalia grew up in Cracow as ‘the responsible one’ – though she was also the one sneaking off to play jazz in the percussion room. Music started as her grandfather’s dream, but quickly became her own.
Now based in Belgium, she’s a founding member of the Karski Quartet, praised for its bold, sincere, and expressive performances. Her sound is rich in colour, high in energy, and always seeking emotional truth.
Natalia believes music lives not just in notes but in the body, in silence, in presence. She’s a lover of tango’s quiet poetry, forest walks, and the slow magic of lemon meringue tart. Joy, for her, lives in deep sound – and in deep friendship.

MIKKO PABLO

Mikko grew up in the Philippines under the tropical sun, where one day he stumbled upon a CD of spa music. Birds chirped, rivers flowed, and somewhere in there, a cello sang. He’d never seen one, but something clicked. At sixteen, he picked up the instrument himself.
What followed wasn’t part of any grand plan, but the cello quietly took him from Manila to California, then Germany, and now Belgium.
Mikko plays in the Susato Trio, a piano trio digging into overlooked corners of the repertoire. He also co-founded EMÆL, an alternative electronic band in Los Angeles, and Karavan. He believes connection begins with openness, humour, and a willingness to be vulnerable, on stage and off.
When not behind the cello, Mikko is usually in the kitchen, on his bike, or chasing small everyday adventures, like trying (and failing) to become a morning person.

ANOUCHKA SCAILLET

Anouchka was born in Cape Town to a South African mother and a Belgian father, making her a fairly literal blend of sunshine and chocolate. Music and adventure entered the picture early – the former enthusiastically encouraged by a father convinced that three was the perfect age to trade dolls for a tiny violin and a lifetime of tuning. She has performed with orchestras in Belgium and Germany, but found her groove in playing either classical, pop or electro at private events. She also gives one-on-one music lessons on the side. Beyond playing the violin, Anouchka enjoys the company of her Bengal cat, Panpan, riding her horse, Mister, and indulging her love for wind-powered adventures — whether on her sailboat or soaring through the sky with her paraglider.

DIEDE VERPOEST

Diede’s first violin lessons came from his father, some of which evolved into passionate debates, but usually ended in joyful living-room concerts. Classically trained on the violin and viola, Diede also has a serious soft spot for chamber music – and a wandering ear for jazz, world, folk, and free improvisation (thanks to Kris Defoort).
He’s played with bluegrass and pop-folk bands, and now brings that same adventurous spirit to the Karski Quartet and to Karavan. On stage, he believes in spontaneity, honesty, and joy – because that’s when music truly speaks.
Offstage, he’s a young dad, a badminton enthusiast, and the proud owner of a vintage Vespa. His dream? To ride it through Italy – not to learn their pizza secrets, but to teach them how to make it the Diede way: Neapolitan, but just a little bit better.
